Who
Schalk Heunis is one of the founders of house4hack, a hackerspace in Centurion. A hackerspace is a physical location where folks can collaborate - these projects range from hardware focused project, e.g. CNC machines to pure software focussed initiatives. Members are encouraged to participate in teams who then has access to the house fast-growing infrastructure.
He is very passionate about open source software and once practically gave away (sold for R1000) a brand new iPhone because it was too closed. Recently he got involved in open hardware and this was part of the motivation for creating the house4hack.
As part of his professional career, he has been involved in contract research work in the Energy Sector for the past 12 years and completed a PhD in Probabilistic Methods Applied to Power Systems from the University of Stellenbosch in 2000. He also ran two research and development groups for his previous employers.
He uses the house4hack as a platform to give back to the FOSS community and stimulate innovation.
